Preventing Bone Fractures in Seniors: Osteoporosis Management

Osteoporosis is known as a silent disease because bone loss occurs without any noticeable symptoms until a sudden low-energy fall results in a hip, spine, or wrist fracture.

Key Preventive Measures

Maintaining optimal bone density requires early screening with a DEXA scan, especially for post-menopausal women and men over 60. Key strategies include:

  • Adequate daily Calcium and Vitamin D3 intake under medical supervision.
  • Regular weight-bearing exercises and resistance training.
  • Home fall-proofing (grab bars in bathrooms, non-slip mats, adequate lighting).
  • Medical anti-resorptive medications where indicated.
