Managing Sciatica & Slipped Disc: Non-Surgical Treatment Options

Sciatica refers to sharp, shooting nerve pain that radiates from the lower back through the hip and down the leg. The most common cause is a herniated or bulging lumbar disc pressing against the sciatic nerve root.

Conservative Treatment is Key

At our orthopaedic and spine practice in Mumbai, we emphasize conservative, evidence-based management first. The vast majority of patients achieve lasting relief through a tailored regimen of:

  • Targeted anti-inflammatory medical management.
  • Physiotherapy focused on core stabilization and nerve gliding exercises.
  • Ergonomic lifestyle and posture modifications.
  • Selective nerve root blocks / epidural injections for acute severe pain.

When is Spine Surgery Indicated?

Surgery (such as microdiscectomy or endoscopic spine decompression) is reserved for patients with progressive neurological deficits (such as foot drop), persistent intractable pain after 6-8 weeks of conservative care, or cauda equina syndrome.
