ACL Tear & Ligament Injuries: Keyhole Arthroscopy & Recovery Timeline

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is vital for knee joint stability during twisting, jumping, and pivoting sports. Sudden deceleration or awkward twisting can cause a complete or partial rupture of the ligament, accompanied by an audible 'pop' and acute knee swelling.

Arthroscopic ACL Reconstruction

Modern keyhole arthroscopy allows reconstruction of the torn ligament using the patient's own tendon graft (hamstring or patellar tendon) through tiny puncture incisions. This ensures minimal scarring, minimal post-operative pain, and rapid healing.

Recovery Stages

  1. Weeks 1-2: Swelling reduction, full knee extension, partial weight-bearing with brace.
  2. Weeks 3-6: Normal gait, stationary cycling, progressive quad strengthening.
  3. Months 3-4: Jogging, agility training, proprioceptive drills.
  4. Months 6-9: Return to competitive contact sports after functional clearance.
